In the beginning, Dunnigan was originally named Antelope, and its founders were J. Both S. Copp and Jolin Wilson. A year after Antelope was founded, A. W. Dunnigan, a postal worker in Yolo County, visited the area and renamed the town after himself. A town plat for Dunnigan was submitted for record by the railroad on November 1st, 1876.
Dunnigan is around 40 miles from Sacramento, California's state capital, and is about 11 miles from the town of Arbuckle. The area of the city is about 5.2 square miles.
Like many other small towns in Yolo County, California, Dunnigan is a census-designated place located next to Interstate 5. The population of the town, according to the 2020 census, is 1,391, making Dunnigan the 963rd largest city in the state of California.
