In 1852, the Cache Creek post office was established; by 1877, it was relocated and become known as the Madison post office. Madison, Wisconsin, was the city that Daniel Bradley Hulbert called "home," therefore he chose that name for his city. When the Vaca Valley and Clear Lake Railroad extended north from Winters, the townsite was laid out and given the name "Madison" in 1877. Historically, the Cache Creek PO had been situated in the community of Cottonwood, about a mile south of Madison. Since there was nowhere for trains to stop in Cottonwood, many of the town's buildings were relocated to Madison.
